Center for Nanophase Materials Science

The Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences (CNMS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is one of five nanoscience research centers (NSRCs) funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Scientific User Facilities Division. It provides a diverse user community with access to state-of-the-art nanoscience research capabilities, expertise, and equipment. The scientists at the CNMS also drive a world class science program with emphasis in theory and simulation, nanofab¬rication, macromolecular synthesis and characterization, and understanding of structure, dynamics and functionality in nanostructured materials using scanning probe microscopy, neutron scattering, optical spectroscopy, and soft-matter electron and helium ion microscopy.

High Flux Isotope Reactor

HFIR is the highest flux reactor-based source of neutrons for research in the United States, and it provides one of the highest steady-state neutron fluxes of any research reactor in the world. The thermal and cold neutrons produced by HFIR are used to study physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, and biology.

Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility

The Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) was established at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2004 with the mission of accelerating scientific discovery and engineering progress by providing outstanding computing and data management resources to high-priority research and development projects. It has helped researchers deliver practical breakthroughs and new scientific knowledge in climate, materials, nuclear science, and a wide range of other disciplines.

Shared Research Equipment User Facility

The Shared Research Equipment (ShaRE) User Facility at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is one of three Electron Beam Microcharacterization Centers supported by the Scientific User Facilities Division of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy. Since its inception in 1977, the ShaRE User Facility has provided access to a suite of advanced instruments and staff scientists for the μm to-Å-scale characterization of materials.
